CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—The fourth-ranked Radcliffe lightweight crew split a pair of races with No. 2 Stanford Saturday morning on the Charles River, as the Cardinal won the varsity eight race and the Black and White took the second varsity.
Stanford's varsity eight (3-1) pulled away from Radcliffe to finish in 6:42.7, while the Black and White (2-1) crossed the line in 6:54.4.
In the second varsity, Radcliffe took a two-seat lead off the start and increased the margin to four seats after 500 meters, eight after 1,000 and open water after 1,500. The Black and White finished in 7:00.5, 7.5 seconds ahead of the Cardinal. Radcliffe's novice eight also raced, placing third.
“The conditions were very challenging, and the second varsity handled themselves with good composure,” said head coach Heather Cartwright, whose crews battled cold temperatures, wind, rain and choppy water. “They had good length through the water and I was pleased with their result.”
