CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Radcliffe heavyweight crew's second varsity eight edged Brown, but the first varsity eight fell to the Bears Saturday on the Charles River. It was the first racing of the season for the Black and White after The Beanpot was postponed two weeks ago.
Race conditions were challenging throughout the morning, especially in the later races when choppy water increased, with temperatures in the low 30s and a gusting cross headwind between 15-18 miles per hour.
The regatta started with Radcliffe finishing in second and third of the varsity four race, behind Brown's top group. The Bears rowed the course in 7:52.1, seven seconds faster than Radcliffe's best boating and well ahead of the rest of the field. Radcliffe followed by winning the second varsity eight competition in 7:27.7. The Black and White won by 3.4 seconds for its first victory of the morning, and of the season.
Next, the first varsities took to the Charles and Brown slipped past Radcliffe. The Bears navigated through in 7:22.6, while Radcliffe finished with a 7:24.5 time.
The racing culminated with Brown taking the third varsity eight matchup in 7:51.0. Radcliffe's third varsity came in at 7:58.2.
The Black and White travel to Ithaca, N.Y., next week to take on Cornell and Princeton for the Class of 1975 Cup.
