One Win, Two Runner-Up Finishes for No. 11 Radcliffe Heavyweight Crew at Class of 1975 Cup
PRINCETON, N.J.—The No. 11 Radcliffe heavyweight crew won one race, placed second in two others and took third in the varsity eight event in the Class of 1975 Cup regatta against No. 6 Princeton, No. 16 Cornell and Columbia Saturday morning on Lake Carnegie.
The Black and White varsity four B finished 9.2 seconds clear of the field in its race, and Radcliffe posted runner-up showings in the second varsity eight and varsity four A races. The Radcliffe varsity eight (5-3) finished third in a field that was tightly packed behind cup winner Princeton.
"Once again, our team overall had a pretty strong day," said head coach Liz O'Leary. "It wasn't a surprise that it was a battle in the varsity race. It was certainly not the result we were after. We've made some progress since last week at Brown, but we have to keep at it."
Princeton led the varsity race from the outset, but the Black and White got off to a strong start to run in second place through 750 meters. Cornell and Columbia, dueling in neighboring lanes, both gained the upper hand on Radcliffe in the middle of the race. Radcliffe moved back in the final 500 meters to edge Cornell by a half-second in 7:20.4. Columbia held off the Black and White by 1.3 seconds and finished five seconds behind the Tigers, who posted a time of 7:14.1.
"As predicted, the Ivy League is tight, and it's super-competitive to stay with other leagues nationally," O'Leary added. "We have our work cut out for us."
The Radcliffe second varsity got off to a similarly strong start but was passed by Columbia. An outstanding finish pulled the Black and White back past the Lions to a runner-up time of 7:20.4. Radcliffe finished 3.5 seconds off the pace of Princeton and 1.5 ahead of Columbia. Cornell placed fourth, 5.2 seconds behind the Black and White.
The varsity four A rowed a strong race to edge Cornell by a half-second with a second-place time of 8:10.1. The B four blew past its opposition in 8:30.6. The third varsity eight placed third in 8:12.2.
