Women's Basketball Falls to No. 14/13 Oklahoma State, 92-62, at the Surf 'N Slam Classic
Fagbenle posted a season-best 18 points and 10 boards against No. 14/13 Oklahoma State (Gil Talbot).
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Temi Fagbenle recorded her second straight double-double but it was not enough as No. 14/13 Oklahoma State downed the Harvard women's basketball team, 92-62, Friday night in the first round of the San Diego Surf 'N Slam Classic.
Fagbenle, who now has three double-doubles on the year, shot 7-of-12 from the floor and was 3-of-3 from the line in 27 minutes of action. Christine Clark totaled 15 points with three assists and three rebounds as Emma Golen added nine points off the bench.
Harvard (7-4) shot just 35.9 percent (23-64) on the night and was 9-of-23 from three-point range. Oklahoma State (10-0), however, connected on 46.8 percent (37-79) of its attempts and held a 44-24 advantage in points in the paint. The Cowgirls were led by Tiffany Bias who scored 24 points while Toni Young (16 pts., 12 rbs.) and Brittney Martin (12 pts., 11 rbs.) each turned in a double-double.
Harvard took an early 5-3 lead off a Fagbenle three-pointer but a 1-of-11 start from the field by the Crimson helped OSU open a 17-7 advantage less than six minutes in. Christine Clark ended the drought with a drive to the basket and Fagbenle followed it up with a short jumper to make it a 17-11 game. The Crimson edged closer with a three from Emma Golen, 20-16, and trailed 25-19 following a Fagbenle and-one.
The Cowgirls used a 7-0 run to regain a double-digit margin, 32-19, as Harvard continued to struggle finding its shooting touch. It was Golen that ended OSU's run this time with her second three of the night and after a Jasmine Evans triple the Crimson trailed by seven, 34-27. The Cowgirls once again opened up a 13-point edge with a 6-0 stretch and despite two Clark layups in the final moments Harvard trailed 42-31 at intermission.
Harvard shot just 11-of-31 from the field in the first half but went 4-of-8 from beyond the arc and 5-of-5 at the line to remain close. Fagbenle nearly posted a double-double before the break with 12 points and eight rebounds and was also the Crimson's best option from the floor shooting 4-of-7. Clark added eight points while Golen notched six on 2-of-3 shooting from three.
Harvard pulled with 10 following an Ali Curtis three and Fagbenle jumper, and trailed 49-39 after Victoria Lippert's triple with 16:55 remaining. The Crimson was unable to make up any more ground, however, as the Cowgirls made it a 61-39 game with a 12-0 run. Another Evans three moved the score to 61-42, but OSU extended its advantage to 23 before a Clark putback put the score at 65-44.
Oklahoma State outscored the Crimson 27-18 over the final 10-plus minutes and walked away with the 92-62 victory.
Harvard will return to action Sunday, Dec. 30 against SMU at 3 p.m. EST in the consolation round of the San Diego Surf 'N Slam Classic. The Mustangs fell to host San Diego State, 88-72, prior to Harvard's tipoff again the Cowgirls.
