Berry Named Rookie of the Year: Three Crimson Players Named All-Ivy
Three Harvard women’s basketball players have been named
to the All-Ivy League teams. Senior co-captain Emily Tay was named
unanimous first-team All-Ivy League, freshman Brogan Berry was
named unanimous Ivy League Rookie of the Year and received
honorable mention honors, while sophomore Emma Markley was named
second-team All-Ivy.
The Crimson was represented on all four all-league teams with Berry
earning a spot on the all-rookie team.
Tay was one of two unanimous selections to the first team. It was
her second unanimous vote and third time being named to the first
team. Tay is second on the team and sixth in the league in scoring
with 12.6 points per game. She became the 13th Harvard player to
join the 1,000 point club and she has 1,253 points after 28 games,
good for eighth in scoring in the Harvard record books. Tay, who
led the league with 5.2 assists per game, ranks second all-time at
Harvard in career assists with 512.
Tay is the fifth Harvard player to be selected to the first team at
least three times and the first since Reka Cserny ’05.
Markley leads the Crimson in scoring with 14.0 points per game and
7.1 rebounds per game. She also leads the team in field goal
percentage, connecting of 50.3 percent of her shots. She is among
the top 10 in the league in six different statistical fields,
including third in field goal percentage, fifth in scoring and
sixth in rebounding. She has posted seven double-doubles on the
season and has led the Crimson in scoring 15 times.
Berry is fifth Harvard player to be named Ivy League Rookie of the
Year and first since Cserny received the honor in 2001-02. Berry is
third on the team in scoring with 11.9 points per game and second
in assists with 3.5. She leads the league in free throw percentage
(.821) and three-point field goal percentage (.411) and was second
in assists/turnover ratio (1.7).
Harvard finished second in the Ivy League standings with an 11-3
record and is 19-9 overall. The Crimson will play in the 2009 WNIT
beginning March 19. The brackets will be announced Monday evening.
