Stephen Harris, the only four-time All-American in the decathlon for the University of Tennessee joined the Harvard coaching staff in July 2009.
Harris was the 2003 NCAA champion in the decathlon as a senior after placing fourth as a freshman, second as a sophomore and fourth as a junior. Harris, who was a two-time captain, broke Lawrence Johnson's program record in the decathlon as a freshman and was the SEC Freshman of the Year. The native of Norcross, Ga., was part of two NCAA team championships for the Volunteers; 2001 outdoors and 2002 indoors. While in Knoxville, Harris was a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and participated in student government.
After graduating from Tennessee with a degree in history, Harris continued competing and taught social studies in Cleveland, Tenn. He was part of the USA team that competed in a dual meet against Germany in 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2005. He qualified and competed at the US Olympic Trials in 2004 and was fourth in the decathlon at the 2005 U.S. Outdoor Track and Field National Championships. He has a lifetime best of 8,103 points in the decathlon.
From 2006-09 he taught social studies at Norcross High School and served as an assistant coach for the boys and girls track and field team. He was also an advisor to Model UN.
Harris has a personal fitness certificate and is a USATF Level I certified coach.
