Meet Results
SWANSEA, U.K. – For the second time in as many meets, the Harvard track and field team joined with Yale and captured the meet title, winning the Welsh Athletics Swansea International meet Wednesday at the Swansea University Track. Harvard and Yale posted a combined score of 91 points, topping Wales U23 (63), Welsh Schools (62) and England South West (58).
Harvard put its best foot forward in the 1,000-meter race, taking both the men's and women's competition. Brian Hill captured the men's race in a time of 2:22.32 and Yale teammate John Van-Deventer was close behind in 2:23.75. Alaina Murphy cruised to a three-second victory in the women's race, turning in a time of 2:50.40.
The Crimson powered the men's and women's 4x400 relay teams as well, as each recorded a comfortable win. John Dingus anchored the men's 4x400 to a time of 3:18.12, more than four seconds faster than the second-place squad. Meisha Brooks, Shannon Conway, Gabby Kelly of Yale and Christina Twicken posted a winning time of 3:45.23, more than 13 seconds ahead of the next best foursome.
The field events helped the Crimson/Bulldogs separate themselves from the pack, as the men and women combined for six event wins. Eric Clayman launched a toss of 59.46 meters (195'1") to take the hammer title by nearly four meters and Dustin Brode (16.30, 53'5") and Edward Brucker (15.32, 50'3") finished one-two in the shot put. Nico Weiler capped the men's field efforts with a win in the pole vault, clearing 4.70 (15'5").
Shannon Watt continued her dominance in the throws, capturing the shot put and discus titles. She posted a throw of 13.30 (43'7") in the shot put and won the discus with a heave of 46.77 (153'5"), more than nine meters farther than her closest competitor. Mary Hirst edged out a quartet of second-place finishers in the high jump, posting a mark of 1.70 (5'7") to take the event.
Harvard and Yale now head to Cambridge, England for the marquee event of the trip: the 40th running of the Harvard/Yale vs. Oxford/Cambridge meet. The competition is slated to begin June 28 at 12:15 p.m. BST (7:15 a.m. Eastern) at the Wilberforce Road Track.
