Grant Qualifies For Hammer Throw Finals at Commonwealth Games

Former Harvard track and field standout Natalie N. Grant ’02 had a strong qualifying round at the 2010 Commonwealth Games Wednesday, helping her qualify for the finals in the women’s hammer throw event.   

Representing Jamaica, Grant posted a mark of 60.18 meters in qualification group B, good for the fourth-highest mark in the group and ninth-best among those in the finals. Grant will contend for a medal in the finals of the event, slated for Thursday, Oct. 7.

Grant was a two-time All-Ivy athlete for the Crimson outdoor track squad, capturing the title in the weight throw at Heps her senior season. The throw that won her the Heps outdoor title is also the school record in the event, set at 59.59 meters.

The Commonwealth games are held every four years and features a multitude of athletic competitions between the countries of the Commonwealth of Nations. There are over 70 countries participating in the 2010 games and 17 sports are featured at the event. The Games were first held in 1930 as the British Empire Games in Hamilton, Canada and were first contested as the Commonwealth Games in 1978.
