Field Athletes Lead Track and Field in First Day of Heps

HANOVER, N.H. – The Harvard men’s and
women’s track and field teams had a number of strong
performances in the field events during the first day of
competition at the 2010 Heptagonal Championships, Saturday at
Leverone Field House. The women finished day one in a tie for third
with defending champion Cornell, compiling 20 points. The men
totaled 10 points through day one, good for a tie for fourth with
Dartmouth and Columbia.
On the women’s side, Harvard’s top performance came in
the long jump as freshman Ashtynn Baltimore placed second with a
leap of 5.99 meters. Junior Claire Richardson added six points to
Harvard’s total with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of
16:43.99 in a third-place finish in the 5,000 meter run. Freshman
Sydnie Leroy finished in a tie for third in the pole vault with a
mark of 3.70 meters, and classmate Shannon Watt added a point with
a sixth-place finish in the shot put, posting a distance of 13.48
meters.
Senior Jack Brady led the Crimson men on the first day of action,
finishing third in the shot put with a mark of 16.84 meters.
Freshman Kenneth Wang Kan earned points with a fifth place finish
in the long jump, posting a leap of 7.06 meters, and junior Sean
Gil rounded out the Harvard scorers with a fifth-place mark of 4.80
meters in the pole vault.
The Crimson returns to the track tomorrow for the second and final
day of competition at the Heptagonal Championships.
