Harvard Opens Indoor Season at Jay Carisella Track and Field Invitational

BOSTON, Mass. – The Harvard men’s and women’s track and field teams kicked off the indoor season Saturday at the First Annual Jay Carisella Track & Field Invitational held at the Reggie Lewis Center. The meet gave several Crimson athletes the chance to compete after weeks of training.

The Harvard women had 13 top six performances during the meet. On the men’s side, eight student-athletes finished in the top six. The Harvard men had two winners on the day and two IC4A qualifiers.

Junior Katrina Drayton was third in the 55 meter dash with a time of 7.34 seconds and sixth in the 200 meters with a time of 26.37 seconds. Freshman Brianne Holland-Stergar was second in the shot put with a heave of 12.34 meters and also placed in the weight, taking sixth with a toss of 15.45 meters.

Junior Dina Emde continued the rich tradition in the high jump with her winning jump of 1.67 meters. Sophomore Shannon Conway was the runner up in the 400 in a time of 59.13, while classmate Lauren Leon was fourth in the 500 meters, clocking in at 1:19.4. Sophomores Kim O’Donnell was the runner up at 800 meters, finishing in 2:19.21 and Meg Looney was fifth in the 1,000 meter run with a time of 3:04.32. Freshmen Meghan Ferreira was third in the 55 meter hurdles, clocking in at 8.41 seconds and Shannon Watt finished third in the shot put with a throw of 12.33 meters.

The Crimson had two 4x400 meter relay teams place in the top 5. The B entry was second in a time of 4:00.40 and the A entry finished in 4:01.52

Sophomore Steven Geloneck won the 55 meter dash in a time of 6.47 seconds. His mark was a personal best and also qualified for the IC4A Championships in March. Classmate Darcy Wilson was victorious in the 3,000 meter run, crossing the finish line in 8:38.34. Senior Jack Brady was the runner up in the weight throw, heaving the weight a personal best 17.85 meters. His mark qualifies for the IC4A Championships.

Senior Justin Grinstead placed third in the 800 meters with a time of 2:00.13, while newcomer Jared Squires was third in the 1,000 meters, finishing in 2:36.26. Junior Ablorde Ashigbi was fourth in the weight with a throw of 16.16 meters and classmate John Fahnensteil finished in a tie for sixth in the 55 meter dash with a time of 6.66. Freshman Weishen Mead was fifth in the mile, clocking in at 4:25.07

Harvard’s 4x400 meter A entry was fifth in a time of 3:25.38

The Crimson will host the Harvard Open Dec. 12 at Gordon Track. No Harvard athletes will compete due to final exams. Harvard will return to action Jan. 9 at the Dartmouth Relays in Hanover, N.H.
