Christensen and Weiler Advance to NCAA Finals

Fayetteville, Ark. - Harvard will have two competitors in the finals of their events Friday night at the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Freshman Nico Weiler and senior Becky Christensen advanced to the men's pole vault and women's high jump finals, respectively, Wednesday afternoon at the John McDonnell Field.

Weiler was one of 14 pole vaulters to advance to Friday evening's final.  The USTFCCA Northeast Male Field Athlete of the Year, was one of nine individuals to clear 5.25 meters on their first attempt to make the cut. After passing the first height of 4.95 meters, Weiler cleared 5.10 and 5.25 meters on his first try. He missed all three attempts at 5.35 meters. Five individuals cleared that height to earn their spots in the final, which will take place at 4:45 p.m. (EST) on Friday.

Christensen was one of 15 women to qualify for the finals in the high jump. She cleared 1.77 meters on her first attempt to earn a spot in the event final Friday at 5 p.m. (EST). Christensen, a three-time All-American and now three-time outdoor finalist passed the first height of 1.70 meters and cleared 1.74 and 1.77 meters on her first attempt. The bar was not raised to the next height.
