Skiing Preps for NCAA Regional Championships

Harvard skiing has high hopes as it heads to the NCAA Regional Championship this weekend (Gil Talbot).

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.
– The Harvard skiing team is set for the Bates Carnival and NCAA Regional Championships in Rumford, Maine this weekend, Feb. 24-25. The events will take place at the Sunday River and Black Mountain Ski Resorts.

Last Time Out
The Harvard skiing team concluded its regular season with a 10th-place finish at the Middlebury Carnival in Middlebury, Vermont last weekend. Senior Rachel Hampton and freshman William Rhatigan led the Crimson with top finishes in their events, including top-10 marks in the classic sprint relays.

Consistent Crimson
With its 10th-place finish at the Middlebury Carnival, the Crimson recorded its fourth top-ten finish of the season. Harvard has only placed lower than the top-ten once, an eleventh-place finish at the UNH Carnival on Jan. 27.

Historic Happenings
Last year, Hampton became the third skier in Harvard program history to appear in multiple NCAA Championships. Hampton would tie the record of three with another appeareance in 2017.

A Year Ago
At the NCAA Regionals a year ago, senior Devlin Shea and sophomore Hannah Hardenbergh registered the top placements for the nordic team in the 10 and 5K FS, while seniors Rachel Hampton and Ian Meyer led the way in the 15 and 20K Classic MS. Junior Kelly Steeves notched the top finish for the alpine women in both the slalom and giant slalom, and junior Pieter Weemaes registered the top finish for the alpine men in the giant slalom.

Top Performers at Middlebury Carnival
Rhatigan performed well in both of his events at the Middlebury Carnival this past weekend. Rhatigan and senior Devlin Shea notched a top-ten finish in the men's classic relay sprint, earning ninth after posting a combined time of 22:03.0. Rhatigan then also led the Crimson with a 31st-place finish in 50:09.1 in the 20K FS.

Hampton, along with sophomore Hannah Hardenbergh, picked up ninth overall in the women's classic relay sprint with a combined time of 24:09.6. Hampton also led the Crimson in the 15K FS, taking home 22nd after crossing the finish line in 42:54.3. Hardenbergh was close behind, recording 33rd overall in 44:27.5.

Junior Kelly Steeves collected the top finishes for the alpine squad, taking 35th overall in the women's slalom with a combined run time of 1:48.75, and 33rd in the giant slalom (2:12.74).

Follow the Leaders
Seniors James Stevenson and Kaitlyn Gibson are serving as the captains for the alpine squad this season, while seniors Devlin Shea and Rachel Hampton will lead the nordic team as captains. 

Wealth of Experience
Harvard skiing welcomes nine freshman to the roster this season, with five additions to the alpine team and four newcomers on the nordic side. Sixteen Crimson returned from last year's roster, including 12 upperclassmen.
