Skiing Opens Season at St. Lawrence Carnival

Harvard skiing begins its 2016-17 campaign at the St. Lawrence Carnival after opening the last two seasons at the Bates Carnival (Gil Talbot).

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.
– The Harvard nordic and alpine skiing teams will kick off the season at the St. Lawrence Carnival in Lake Placid, New York on Friday, Jan. 20. The nordic squad will compete at Mt. Van Hoevenberg and the alpine team will race on Whiteface Mountain and Draper's Drop at the two-day event through Saturday.

Harvard concluded its 2015-16 campaign with a 10th-place finish at the NCAA Regional Championships in Middlebury, Vermont. The Crimson recorded a top-10 finish in every carnival it competed in for the third-straight year and had senior Rachel Hampton represent the Harvard nordic squad in the NCAA Championships.

At the NCAA Regional Championships, the nordic team was led by senior Devlin Shea and sophomore Hannah Hardenbergh in the 10 and 5K FS, as well as by Hampton and senior Ian Meyer in the 15 and 20K Class MS.

On the alpine side, junior Kelly Steeves notched the top finish for the alpine women in both the slalom and giant slalom, while junior Pieter Weemaes registered the top finish for the alpine men in the giant slalom.

NCAA Championships
Senior Rachel Hampton made her second consecutive NCAA Championship appearance last season, finishing 34th in the 15K Classic with a final time of 1:01.23. Hampton outraced her start position, finishing just over a minute shy of a top-30 finish. Two seasons ago, the Telluride, Colorado native collected 38th overall in the 5K Freestyle (14:35.4).

Leaders of the Pack
Seniors James Stevenson and Kaitlyn Gibson are serving as the captains for the alpine squad this season, while seniors Devlin Shea and Rachel Hampton will lead the nordic team as captains.

Crimson Experience
Harvard skiing welcomes nine freshman to the roster this season, with five additions to the alpine team and four newcomers on the nordic side. Sixteen Crimson returned from last year's roster, including 12 upperclassmen.

Up Next
The Crimson returns to action Jan. 27-28 at the UNH Carnival in Jackson, New Hampshire.
