CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Senior co-captain Rachel Brown and sophomore Kasey Lange of the Harvard softball team have been named Ivy League Pitcher and Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. This is the first week of the 2012 season the league has named award winners.
Brown picked up the ninth Pitcher of the Week award of her career, after taking home Ivy League Pitcher of the Year honors last season. Brown compiled a 1-1 record last weekend at the USF Under Armour Invitational, starting two games and making a pair of relief appearances. In her first start of the season, Brown went seven innings in a 2-1 Harvard win over Toledo, scattering three hits, allowing one run and fanning nine batters. She also pitched two innings of perfect relief against South Florida in the tournament finale. For the weekend, she totaled 18 innings pitched, 21 strikeouts and a 0.78 earned run average.
Lange earned the third Ivy Player of the Week award of her young career, coming off a stellar freshman season where she was unanimously named league Rookie of the Year. The sophomore led all Harvard hitters at the USF tournament with eight hits and three runs scored. She collected multiple hits in three of the five tournament games, including a 3-for-4 showing in the tournament finale against South Florida. She picked up her first home run of the season against the Bulls and drove in a pair of runs as well.
Up next, Harvard wings westward for its annual spring break trip to California. The Crimson begins the trip with a showdown against Cal State Northridge March 9 at 5 p.m. (EST).
