Rachel Brown picked up her second win of the season Friday against Cal State Northridge (Harvard Athletic Communications).
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Senior pitcher Rachel Brown logged a season-high 13 strikeouts as the Harvard softball team blanked tournament host Cal State Northridge, 3-0, Friday in the opening game of the Northridge Classic. The win puts Harvard back at .500 with a 3-3 record on the season.
Brown turned in her strongest performance of the young season, scattering three hits and walking none in a dominant showing in the circle. She retired the side in order in five of the seven innings for her second win of the season.
The Crimson staked Brown to an early lead, pushing a run across in the bottom of the first. Jane Alexander poked a one-out single to right field and moved to second on a Kasey Lange groundout. Whitney Shaw put a ball in play that the pitcher failed to field, allowing Shaw to reach base and Alexander to score all the way from second. Lange, the reigning Ivy League Player of the Week, extended the Harvard lead to 2-0 in the fourth inning, blasting her second home run of the season to right field.
Harvard manufactured another run in the fifth to take a 3-0 lead in the contest. Rookie Katherine Appelbe reached on an error to start the inning, and Shelbi Olson followed with a single to third base. Two batters later, Stephanie Regan drove a single up the middle, loading the bases for Alexander. The senior shortstop lifted a fly ball to center that proved to be deep enough to score Appelbe on the sacrifice. Brown struck out the side in the seventh to seal the 3-0 victory for Harvard.
The Crimson is back in action tomorrow as it takes on Cal State Bakersfield and Cal State Northridge in the second day of the Northridge Classic. The game against Bakersfield will begin at 11:30 a.m. (2:30 p.m. EST) and the Northridge contest will start at 2:00 p.m. (5:00 p.m. EST).
