Sailing Wins Thompson Trophy, Clinches Four Top-Five Finishes

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Racing in four regattas across New England this weekend, the Harvard sailing team claimed its third first-place finish of the season, taking home the Thompson Trophy at Connecticut College. The Crimson also earned a second-place mark at the Owen/Mosbacher/Knapp Trophies, while claiming fifth at both the President's Trophy and Oberg Trophy.

Harvard edged out an 18-team field at the Thompson Trophy last Sunday, claiming the crown with 190 points, 69 fewer points than second-place Stanford. Eli Burnes and Kevin Coakley placed in the top-three in all but one race to finish first in the C-Division with 32 points. Nicholas Karnovsky, Jessica Williams, Benjamin Zheng and Christine Gosioco earned a third-place finish in the B-Division, tallying eight top-five placements, while the A-Division contributed 77 points to Harvard's total.

At the Owen/Mosbacher/Knapp Trophies, the Crimson finished in second with 182 points, narrowly passing Coast Guard by six points. Henry Burnes, Catherine Tang and Tess Avery clinched a first-place finish in the B-Division, earning four first-place finishes. Taylor Ladd and Kirstin Anderson contributed 127 points to the Crimson's overall mark.

In a tight race where the top five were only separated by 13 points, the Crimson registered a fifth-place finish down the river at Boston University at the President's Trophy. In the A-Division, Taylor Gavula and Emily Wang claimed second place with 33 points after recording three top-five placements.

Harvard stayed local for the Oberg Trophy at Northeastern last Saturday, placing fifth with 205 points in a 16-team field. Andrew Puopolo and Iulianna Taritsa earned the Crimson's highest placement at fourth in the C-Division with 56 points, while Jonas Nelle and Emma Jakobson finished eighth in the B-Division after a head-to-head tiebreaker with Tufts.

The Crimson will race in three regattas next weekend, April 21-22, hosting the Boston Dinghy Club Challenge Cup with MIT, while traveling to the Reed Trophy at Coast Guard and the Admirals' Cup at King's Point.
