Men's Water Polo Splits at Bruno Fall Classic

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – In the conclusion of the Bruno Fall Classic, the Harvard men's water polo team came out with its first win of the season over Washington & Jefferson, 17-10, before falling to No. 9 UC Irvine, 18-9, to earn a 1-1 split.

In the 9:45 a.m. opener, the Crimson rode a powerful first half, to take down Washington & Jefferson (0-4). Harvard (1-4) scored four times and did not surrender a goal in the first before finding the net five times in the second to take a 9-3 lead into halftime.

The Crimson once again dominated the Presidents, 5-2, in the third. Washington & Jefferson outscored Harvard, 5-3, in the final frame, but the Crimson held on for the victory.

Sophomore Noah Harrison led Harvard with four goals while junior Max Murphy and freshman Viktor Wrobel netted three apiece. Sophomores Austen Novis and Robbie Fluegge contributed two steals, respectively. Senior Jimmy Field and sophomores Connor Denny and Colin Woolway combined for six saves.

In Harvard's final game, UC Irvine (4-0) jumped out to en early three-goal advantage after the first period. Harvard tried to play catch up in the second period scoring three goals, but the Eaters matched the Crimson's offense to hold a 7-3 advantage at the half.  Out of the locker rooms UC Irvine continued its offensive ways and scored six times in the third period to hold a decsivie 13-7 lead that the Crimson could not muster enough to catch.

Fluegge paced the Crimson offense with three tallies while Harrison and sophomore Blake Lee notched two goals apiece. Harrison and sophomore Ben Zepfel record two steals each while Harrison also handed out four assists. Woolway (seven saves) and Field (three saves) split time in net for Harvard.

The Crimson heads to Princeton, N.J., Sept. 14-15 for the Princeton Invitational.
