Harvard Men's Water Polo Has Mixed Results on Day One at Northerns

Senior co-captain Bret Voith notched eight goals, four assists and three steals Saturday at the CWPA Northern Division Championship at MIT (Harvard Athletic Communications).

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Senior co-captain Bret Voith had a huge day in the pool, leading the Crimson to a split on the first day of the Collegiate Water Polo Association Northern Division Championship held across town at MIT with an 18-5 win over Connecticut College after falling, 8-5, against Fordham in its first game.

"We had a great game, the guys played really hard," head coach Ted Minnis said. "We just couldn't put the ball away (against Fordham)."

Harvard certainly played the Rams closer than the 13-5 loss it suffered in September, but numerous near-misses with balls hitting the post and crossbar time after time prevented the Crimson from getting over the hump. Voith led the team with three goals and three assists in the game while fellow senior Alex Thompson continued his season-long defensive efforts with three steals. Thompson would finish with nine takeaways on the day after grabbing six more against Connecticut College in the night cap.

In its second game of the day, the Crimson met up with Connecticut College. Voith notched five more goals as five different Harvard players scored multiple times in an 18-5 route of the Camels.

The Crimson will wrap up their 2010 season in the fifth-place game of the CWPA Northern Championship Sunday at 11:30 a.m. against Iona.

"We definitely want to get to 12 wins," Minnis said. "That's our goal. Whoever we play, that's the team that's stopping us from that goal."
