CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Coming off an appearance in the EIVA Tournament championship, the Harvard men's volleyball team has been picked third in the 2014 EIVA Preseason Poll, conference officials announced Wednesday.
Defending champion Penn State was chosen to repeat, receiving seven of the eight first-place votes by the conference head coaches and nine total points. Princeton was chosen second with a total of 20 points and the one remaining first-place vote, while Harvard finished third, its highest ever finish in the poll, with 23 points. George Mason (32 points), St. Francis (Pa.) (38), NJIT (50), Sacred Heart (52) and Rutgers-Newark (64) rounded out the preseason rankings.
Harvard returns 10 letterwinners from last year's team which went 18-9 overall and 10-4 against the EIVA. The Crimson earned the third seed in the EIVA Tournament, and upset second-seeded George Mason, 3-2, to earn its first trip to the conference title match. Harvard enjoyed the highest national ranking in program history when it was rated No. 14 in both the Feb. 25 and March 4 polls, and picked up its first win ever against Penn State, defeating the Nittany Lions 3-0 at home to end their streak of 51 straight wins against EIVA opponents.
Three of Harvard's returnees earned all-conference honors a year ago, including junior DJ White who received his second selection to the first team. Senior Kyle Rehkemper and junior Caleb Zimmick both earned their first All-EIVA accolades, being named to the second team.
The Crimson will open its 2014 campaign at the UCSB Asics Invitational, Jan. 3-4.
