CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – With victories over visiting Illinois State and Fairfield Sunday, the Harvard men's tennis team ensured it will carry a ton of momentum into its Ivy League opener Friday, as it extended its winning streak to four and has now won six of its last eight matches with the sweep.
In the first match against Illinois State, the Crimson suffered a rare sweep in the doubles, losing the point for the first time in five matches. Harvard's singles play picked it up, however, winning five of six matches for the 5-2 victory. Freshman Casey MacMaster continued his impressive rookie singles campaign during the spring duals season, winning his third match in a row to go to 10-2.
Against Fairfield, the doubles crew saw a completely opposite result, sweeping all three matches to clinch the point and give the Crimson an early 1-0 lead. That would prove vital, as Harvard split the singles matches with the Stags, getting wins from Joshua Tchan, Alexei Chijoff-Evans and Tunc Kiymaz to take the dual, 4-3.
The Crimson opens the 2011 Ivy League season at the Murr Center Tennis Courts against Cornell at 2 p.m. Friday, then follows with another Ivy League home match at 2 p.m. Saturday against Columbia.
