CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Freshman defender Richard
Smith of the ninth-ranked Harvard men’s soccer team, who
scored the game-winning goal in Harvard’s 1-0 win over Penn
Sunday, has been honored as the Ivy League Rookie of the Week, the
conference office announced Monday afternoon.
In a 0-0 game in the 68th minute, Smith, a native of Durham,
England, tallied the first goal of his collegiate career, tipping
in a cross in the Crimson’s 1-0 victory. Smith’s goal
helped clinch Harvard's 13th Ivy League title and the first for the
program since 2006. Smith also started the game at defense, helping
Harvard allow only two shots on goal against the Quakers,, as the
Crimson recorded the team's eighth shutout of the year.
Smith and the Crimson concluded the regular season with a 13-3-1
overall record and a 5-1-1 mark in Ancient Eight games.
