CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—Senior forward Michael Biega has been named ECAC Hockey MLX Skates Player of the Week for his role in the Harvard men’s hockey team’s road sweep of Clarkson in the first round of the league playoffs.
Biega totaled three points in the two-game sweep of the Golden Knights last weekend, netting the game-winning goal in each contest. His first goal broke a 1-1 tie in the third period of Friday’s playoff opener, lifting the Crimson to a 2-1 victory. In Saturday’s 6-4 win, Biega assisted on Pier-Olivier Michaud’s goal to tie the game at 1-1 in the second period. He scored the eventual game-winner, Harvard’s fifth goal, in the third period and finished +2 for the weekend.
The Montreal native has scored in the third period of each of the last three Crimson games. Each of those tallies has held up as the game-winner. Harvard’s active career leader in goals (32), assists (47), points (79) and games played (124), Biega ranks third on the Crimson in goals (10), assists (14) and points (24) this season.
It is the third straight week a Harvard player has been honored by ECAC Hockey. Danny Biega, Michael’s younger brother, garnered top-player honors Feb. 22, and senior goaltender Ryan Carroll was named Goalie of the Week last week. It is Michael Biega’s third ECAC weekly honor. He was twice named ECAC Rookie of the Week during his freshman season of 2007-08.
Harvard, winner of five straight games, visits No. 18 Dartmouth this weekend for a best-of-three ECAC Hockey Championship quarterfinal series. The teams meet Friday and Saturday nights at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 4 p.m., if necessary. The winning team will reach the league quarterfinals, being held this season at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J., for the first time.
