While Stanley Cup winner Craig Adams ’99 had the most
successful 2009 postseason of any Harvard alum playing pro hockey,
he was just one of five former Crimson skaters to play in the
National Hockey League this season.
Dominic Moore ’03, Noah Welch ’05, Tom Cavanagh
’05 and Craig MacDonald ’99 all saw time with NHL
squads in 208-09. They joined Adams, who started the season with
the Chicago Blackhawks before joining the Pittsburgh Penguins late
in the season. Adams played in all 24 of Pittsburgh’s playoff
games to win his second Stanley Cup in four years.
Moore, a former Penguin, had a breakout season, playing for his
hometown Toronto Maple Leafs and the Buffalo Sabres. He started the
season with the Leafs, skating in 63 games, often as the
team’s assistant captain. He scored 12 goals and added 29
assists for Toronto before being dealt to Buffalo in a move to help
the Sabres make a run at the playoffs. Moore scored a goal and
recorded three assists in 18 games with the Sabres to finish with
career-high season totals of 13 goals, 32 assists and 45
points.
Welch, who began his NHL career in Pittsburgh, started his season
in Miami, with the Florida Panthers. After being sidelined with an
injury for most of 2007-08, the former Crimson All-America
defenseman returned to the Panthers’ lineup for 23 games,
notching a goal and an assist. He was then traded to the Tampa Bay
Lightning, for whom he played in 17 more games on the blue
line.
After making his NHL debut a year earlier, Cavanagh saw his first
extended stints with the San Jose Sharks in 2008-09. He played in
17 games and scored his first NHL goal March 28 against the Phoenix
Coyotes. MacDonald played in the NHL for the eighth season, suiting
up for eight games with the Columbus Blue Jackets. He registered a
goal and an assist.
Several other former Crimson players played in other professional
leagues this season. See below for a complete list, stats courtesy
