Men’s Fencing Welcomes Four Freshmen for Next Season

CAMBRIDGE – Mass. – Peter Brand, the head coach of the Harvard men's fencing team, has announced the addition of four freshmen for the upcoming 2017-18 season: Adrian Thein-Sandler (Epee), Charles Horowitz (Epee), Geoffrey Tourette (Foil) and Edward Zhao (Sabre).

"This is one of the strongest recruiting classes we have had in some time. All of them have had extensive competitive experience both nationally and internationally," said head coach Peter Brand. "In addition to their proven individual results, they all have a proven record as team players. Needless to say, we are excited about having them join us, as they will have an immediate and significant impact on our program."

The incoming freshmen join a team that finished fifth last year at the NCAA Championships, and returns sabre national champion Eli Dershwitz.

Member of the USA Fencing Cadet Epee Team at the FIE Junior/Cadet World Championships in 2014 and 2015 … As a member of Team USA, won gold as a junior individual and member of the senior team as well as winning silver on the junior team at the 2013 Maccabiah Games … Mother graduated from Harvard College … Uncle rowed varsity lightweight crew at Harvard, graduating in 1985.

Coached by Eric Hansen at the Los Angeles International Fencing Center … Member of the LAIFC team from 2014-17 … Bronze Medal winner at the 2016 Cadet Fencing World Championships … 2016 Cadet U.S. National Champion … 2015 Cadet North American Cup Champion … Member of the U.S. Fencing All-Academic first team every year from 2014-17 … Volunteered with the Food Forward Organization for three years … Father rowed at University of Cal Berkley and won a bronze medal at the Pac-10 Championships in 1983 … Mother was a five-time high school tennis champion … Cousin plays professional soccer in The Netherlands.

Fenced at the Silicon Valley Fencing Center for 12 years … Six-time national champion in various age groups … Member of the U-17 and U-20 national teams for three years … Member of the 2017 World Junior Championship team … Won 2016 individual and team Cadet World Championship … 2015 Cadet Individual World Championships bronze medalist … 2015 US Fencing All-Academic first team member.

Fencer at the Virginia Academy of Fencing … In 2014-15, fenced at five different cadet world cups … Made the top 32 in the North American Cup in 2015 and 2016 … National Merit Scholar … Member of the St. Albans Cum Laude Society … Brother, Eric Zhao '18 fences at Harvard.
