QUEENS, N.Y.- The Harvard men's and women's fencing teams competed at the St. John's Invitational. The seventh-ranked men's squad, which moves to 6-5 on the season, earned both Crimson victories at the event, downing Columbia and Ohio State.  The Harvard women fall to 7-5 on the year. The team was without one of its best fencers, Noam Mills, who was away competing in the World Cup in Qatar.

Both Crimson teams lost to No. 1 Penn State, with the women dropping a 20-7 decision and the men 17-10. Second-ranked Notre Dame earned victories over the Crimson men and women. The men's squad fell, 19-8, and the third-ranked Harvard women were edged, 17-10.

The Harvard men's team defeated No. 5 Columbia, 16-11, to give the Crimson a victory, scoring five points in the sabre and foil and six in the epee. The men captured their second victory at the event, a 15-12 showing over No. 3 Ohio State. The squad downed the Buckeyes in the sabre, 5-4, and in the epee, 7-2. The Crimson women's team bowed to No. 4 Columbia and No. 6 Ohio State. Against the Lions, the women were able to earn a win in the foil, posting a 6-3 decision, but ultimately fell, 18-9, overall. The Buckeyes edged the Crimson in the sabre and epee bouts by identical 5-4 margins.

In the teams' final matches of the day, the women lost to St. John's, 19-8, despite winning the sabre competition, 5-4. Although the men's team earned wins in the sabre, 6-3, and the epee, 5-4, they were edged 14-13 by the eight-ranked Red Storm.

The Crimson returns to action Jan. 30, as both the men and women take on Brandeis, Air Force and Haverford at Waltham, Mass.
