No. 2 Men’s Lightweight Crew Wins Jope Cup at Eastern Sprints

The Jope Cup victory was the 22nd for Harvard in program history (Zack Williamson).

WORCESTER, Mass. – Raising the Jope Cup after a damp day of rowing on Lake Quinsigamond, No. 2 Harvard men's lightweight crew placed first in the team standings at Eastern Sprints on Sunday. The varsity eight took second on the afternoon, while the second varsity rowed to victory.

"This was a huge achievement for the team. To win the points trophy today, for every guy on the team to participate in that, is really special," said Billy Boyce, the Friends of Harvard Lightweight Rowing Coach for Men's Lightweight Crew.

Tightly matched to Cornell in the varsity eight grand final, the Crimson was slightly edged by the Big Red at the finish by just 0.8 seconds. Harvard took second with a time of 5:41.65, and by virtue of topping Yale and Princeton earned the Jope Cup for the first time since 2011.

"These are great kids that have bought into what we are doing, and we're thrilled for them," continued Boyce.

With the 1V8 taking second, all boat members earned All-Ivy League second-team honors.

The second varsity captured the regatta championship with a time of 5:46.55, beating second-place Yale by almost two seconds. The Crimson took the lead early in the race, and steadily grew its advantage over the remaining kilometer. The win gave the Crimson its second Sprints title in the second varsity in the past three seasons.

Rowing to third-place in the third varsity, Harvard was neck and neck with Princeton for second before getting edged at the stripe by 0.8 seconds. The Crimson tallied the top overall time in the qualifying round, and registered a mark of 5:52.12 in the grand final.

The fourth varsity was locked in a battle with Cornell for third place in the grand final, but finished fourth at the line by less than a tenth of a second (5:55.36). The fifth and sixth varsities competed in the same race, taking second and sixth, respectively, with times of 5:58.94 and 6:18.08.

Harvard will row next at the IRA National Championships, held June 2-4 at Lake Natoma outside of Sacramento, California.
