Harvard and Radcliffe Crews Complete Successful Weekend at Head of the Charles

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The lightweight crews from Harvard and Radcliffe each won their respective eights event at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston Oct. 21. On the men's side, Harvard won the Point Trophy for the second year in a row, awarded to the club, school, college or university that has the most successful regatta. The HOCR is the world's largest two-day rowing event with over 300,000 spectators lining the banks of the Charles River in Cambridge and Boston.

Radcliffe's lightweight eights' win was the first in the history of the event for the team. Overall, it was the eighth HOCR title won by Radcliffe and 42nd for Harvard. The men's lightweight eights earned Harvard's 41st HOCR victory with a dominant performance in the event.

The two wins were not Harvard's only impressive outings, as the eights from both heavyweight crews turned in solid efforts. The men's heavyweight crew was nipped by Washington to earn second place and the Radcliffe heavyweights placed seventh in a star-studded championship lineup. Radcliffe's race included USRowing, which had many gold-medal winning Olympians, and the London Rowing Club's "Great Eight" of international scullers. USRowing's winning boat featured former Radcliffe crew members Caryn Davies '05 and Esther Lofgren '09, who each rowed for the United States in the 2012 London Olympics.
