Harvard and Radcliffe Rowers Slated to Compete at Rowing World Cup
Several Harvard and Radcliffe rowers will race in the Rowing
World Cup in Lucerne, Switzerland July 10-12. Leading the Crimson
contingent are 2009 graduates Mortiz Hafner, Esther Lofgren and
Henrik Rummel and 2010 lightweight captain Martin Eiermann.
Lofgren, who sat in the four seat of Radcliffe’s varsity
eight that won a silver medal at the EAWRC Sprints, is a member the
U.S. women’s eight. She won silver in the women’s four
at the 2008 FISA World Championships.
Rummel, who was a three-year member of Harvard’s varsity
eight and earned a silver medal at the EARC Sprints, is making his
senior level debut in the U.S. men’s eight. He won a gold
medal in the men’s eight at the U-23 world championships last
summer.
Eiermann and Hafner, who won silver at the EARC Sprints and bronze
at the IRA National Championship in Harvard’s lightweight
varsity eight, will team up in the lightweight men’s pair for
Germany.
Rummel will compete against former Crimson oarsmen Malcolm Howard
’05, who will be rowing for his native Canada. Howard won
gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, becoming the first Harvard rower
to win gold in crew. This will be the first race for the Canadian
eight in the Rowing World Cup series.
Cameron Winklevoss ’04, another 2008 Olympian, will row for
the United States in the men’s four. Winklevoss and his twin
brother, Tyler advanced to the final in the men’s pair in
Beijing.
The Rowing World Cup series was launched in 1997 and includes all
14 Olympic boat classes. The overall Rowing World Cup champions
will be determined after a series of three regattas. This other two
regattas were held May 29-31 in Banyoles, Spain, and June 19-21 in
Munich, Germany.
