Harvard Men’s Basketball Falls at UConn, 57-49

STORRS, Conn. – Wesley Saunders sank six baskets and led the Crimson with 14 points, but the Harvard men's basketball team dropped a road game at Connecticut, 57-49, Friday evening.

Christian Webster made three 3-pointers and had nine points, while Steve Moundou-Missi reached double figures with 10 points, shooting 5-of-6 from the floor, as the Crimson slips to 4-4 on the year. DeAndre Daniels led UConn with 23 points, and Ryan Boatright added 16 points for the Huskies, who improve to 7-2.

Harvard outrebounded UConn, 27-20, but shot only 2-of-5 from the foul line (.400) and 5-of-16 from beyond the arc (.313), while turning the ball over 18 times.

UConn jumped out to a 9-0 lead after the first 4:26 of play, but Jonah Travis snapped the UConn run with a two-handed dunk. 11-2. The Crimson only hit one of its first eight shots, while the Huskies went 6-of-7 to go up, 15-2, at the first media timeout. Siyani Chambers stepped up and nailed an open 3-pointer for the Crimson, bringing Harvard back within 10, 15-5, before the second media timeout.

Saunders added a bucket for the Crimson, 15-7, and then Webster nailed a trey, as Harvard got within five, 15-10. With 8:42 left in the first, Saunders headed to the charity stripe and made the first of two, as Harvard extended its run to 9-0, 15-11. Webster made it a one-point game, 15-14, when he made another 3-pointer, but UConn answered with a triple of its own, snapping a 12-0 run for the Crimson.

After Moundou-Missi scored on a layup from under the hoop, 20-16, Webster hit his third trey, as the Crimson kept it within two possessions, 23-19. Laurent Rivard made his own shot from beyond the arc, making it 25-22, with just under three minutes left in the first. Moundou-Missi added another layup, as the Crimson trailed by only one, 25-24, with 2:08 left.

At the break. Webster paced Harvard with nine points, going 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, while Daniels led UConn with 15 points.

In the second, Travis opened the scoring for Harvard with a reverse layup, and Saunders made a nice move in the lane to add another bucket, keeping the Crimson within three, 31-28. Travis scored on another basket in the pain, cutting the deficit to just one, 31-30, before the first media timeout of the frame.

After UConn went up by seven, 41-34, the Huskies quickly added two buckets coming out of a media timeout and led, 46-34, with 6:53 to go. Saunders answered with a strong move for a bucket in the paint, 46-36, and then scored on a jumper, keeping the Crimson within 10, 48-38.

With 4:45 remaining, Saunders headed to the line and made the second, 48-39, but UConn answered with a bucket on the other end to go back up by 11 points. Saunders who scored three straight buckets, added a two-handed dunk, keeping Harvard in it, 52-41. In the final two minutes, Rivard made a layup, 53-43, and Moundou-Missi drew contact before hitting a shot in the paint, 55-45.
