CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard has released its 2013 field hockey schedule, which features 17 games. The Crimson will play seven games at Jordan Field, including three home Ivy League contests.
Led by second-year head coach Tjerk van Herwaarden, Harvard will play its usual seven-game Ivy slate, as well as 10 non-conference games in 2013. The schedule also sets the Crimson against three NCAA tournament teams from 2012, including Massachusetts, Northeastern and reigning NCAA champion Princeton.
The season begins Sept. 6 at UMass, before the Crimson's first home game Sept. 8 against Bryant. A road game at Holy Cross Sept. 13 is next and the Ivy League opener is scheduled for Sept. 21 at Yale. Harvard returns home to face Penn Sept. 28 and travels to New Hampshire the next day to finish the month of September.
October starts with a home matchup against Brown Oct. 5 and a game at UMass-Lowell, one of the newest member of Division I, Oct. 9. The Crimson then plays Fairfield at home Oct. 13, before taking a weekend trip to Central New York to face Cornell Oct. 19 and Colgate Oct. 20. Harvard will prepare for its toughest three-game stretch of the year after the trip, as the Crimson makes the short drive to BC Oct. 23, hosts defending Ivy champion Princeton Oct. 26 and travels to Northeastern Oct. 30.
Harvard plays three games in November, its most in the month since 2002. The Crimson invites Dartmouth and Vermont to Cambridge Nov. 2 and 3, respectively, and finishes the regular season Nov. 10 at Columbia.
The Crimson's roster features six newcomers and several key returners, including second team All-Ivy League choice Caitlin Rea and last year's leading goal-scorer, Noel Painter. Rea, who played in all 16 games and led the team in assists, shots and shots on goal, recently competed at USA Field Hockey's 2013 Womens' National Championship.
