Mike Cole and Josh Carter Earn Final Gold Helmet Awards of the Season

 CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Defensive end Mike Cole of Maine and quarterback Josh Carter of Springfield are the final recipients of the New England Football Writers’ Gridiron Club of Greater Boston Gold Helmet Awards for the 2011college football season.

Cole was strong defensively for the Black Bears in its 32-21 victory over UMass. The sophomore defensive end recorded seven tackles, one pass breakup and recovered two fumbles on the afternoon. Cole’s second fumble recovery occurred in the endzone, giving the Black Bears the lead for good as Maine defeated the Minute Men, 32-21.

Carter was a force on the ground for the Pride, rushing for a school record 299 yards in a 44-36 loss at Union. The senior quarterback ended his career in explosive fashion, finding the endzone four times on 23 carries. Carter also added 71 yards and a score through the air. Carter proved to be a long distance threat after recording three touchdown runs of over 60 yards (64, 63, 60) and one of 38 yards. The Marlborough, Mass.,native also converted on a pair of two-point conversions to add to his sterling resume. This honor marks the second time this year that Carter has received Gold Helmet accolades, previously being honored on Oct. 19 after recording 224 rushing yards and three scores against Ithaca.
