Group Exercise Classes

Group Exercise classes include aqua aerobics, pilates, kickboxing, yoga, step, muscle conditioning, and many more (full list of class descriptions). The majority of these classes are held in the MAC mezzanine or indoor cycling studio and the Hemenway multipurpose room.

How do I participate in Harvard's Group Exercise Classes?

Staff & Non-Summer School Students: In order to attend Group Ex classes, you must first have membership to the appropriate facility. Please note that the membership structure has changed this year.  In addition to your annual or seasonal membership, you will be given the option of four add ons:  towel service, class access, squash membership and tennis membership. In the past, class access has been processed in person at the MAC and Hemenway, whereas this year it must be processed in addition to your membership online. Your ID will be activated with the add on information as soon as the purchase is complete. Please also note that if you do not purchase class access we will honor those who have a June 2009 sticker on their ID until June 30th. Beginning July 1st, you will have to pay a $10 drop in class fee for each class you would like to attend.

Summer School Students:  Summer school students must sign up for group exercise classes in person. We are holding group exercise class registration for summer school students on Sunday, June 21st 11-3pm on the Science Center Lawn & Monday June 22nd 11:30-1:00pm in the Hemenway lobby. The cost for summer access is $65.00 during one of the designated registration times and $75.00 outside of the designated registration times.  If you miss registration, you may register at the front desk of either facility (no registrations between 4-5:30 pm weekdays.)

How do I participate in classes after I obtain access? Once you have taken these steps, you will receive a sticker on your ID. Whenever you want to attend a class, show the sticker to the front desk attendant and ask for a class pass. The front desk attendants will begin handing out passes 30 minutes prior to the start of each class. You may only take a pass for yourself, and you may not attend class without a pass. The instructor will collect the passes. If the front desk runs out of passes, the class is full for that particular session, and will reset each time. Download current Group Ex schedules, below.

What if I just want to try one group exercise class? You can try a group exercise class by paying a $10.00 drop in fee. Choose the class you would like to try and complete the drop in form at the front desk.

Hemenway GX Schedule July 20-August 7 2009 (Updated July 10)

Hemenway GX Schedule August 10-September 11 (Updated August 5)

Please note: Class attendance numbers will be monitored and classes with consistently low attendance may be eliminated.

New! Private Group Exercise Class Request

These classes are not progressive, so beginners can drop in at any time during the semester. You do not need to sign up for specific classes, but can try out several classes or attend various classes as your schedule and mood changes.

During the academic year, class access is free for students; there is a fee for all non-students. This fee includes the classes at the MAC and at Hemenway, as well as the January class schedule and late Spring. I
n the summer months, all participants (regardless of affiliation or number of years of service) must pay to participate in group exercise classes. Please note: purchasing class access does not grant you facility access. Facility access (membership) must be purchased through the ticket office. Go to the memberships link of the website or call (617) 495-2211.

Specialty Classes

We also offer progressive Specialty classes, with each week's instruction building on the prior classes. These classes include Dance Conditioning, Ballroom Dance 1 & 2, Salsa 1 & 2, Hip Hop Dance, Pilates Mat Work (beginner level), Pilates Mat Progression (intermediate to advanced level), Fencing I & II, Power Training, Ice Skating for Beginners, Ice Skating for Figure Skaters, Ice Skating for Hockey Skaters, Beginner/Advanced Beginner Swimming, Intermediate Swimming, Stroke Improvement and Fitness Swim Challenge. Due to the specialized subject matter, smaller size and more intensive focus of the instructor, there is a fee for all members to attend these classes. Non-MAC or Hemenway members are eligible to participate only as the partner of a Harvard affiliate in classes requiring a partner. Specialty classes are offered at the beginning of each semester; schedules will be posted in the weeks preceding the sign-up period.
Please note: purchasing specialty class access does not grant you facility access. Facility access (membership) must be purchased through the ticket office. Go to the memberships link of the website or call (617) 495-2211.
