Baseball Sweeps Home-Opening Doubleheader from Brown, 17-7, 7-1

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard University baseball totaled 24 runs, 32 hits, eight doubles and three triples alongside 22 strikeouts from its pitching staff as the Crimson swept its home-opening doubleheader from Brown University, 17-7 and 7-1, on Saturday afternoon at O'Donnell Field in the first two games of a three-game series.
 
Playing its first home games in 1,049 days and hosting a regular season Ivy League game for the first time in 1,070 days, the Crimson (13-8, 5-0 Ivy) scored 11 runs in the bottom of the first in game one on the way to the opening victory before closing out the game two win over the Bears (4-14, 1-4 Ivy) with that contest's final six runs.
 
Four Crimson batters posted four or more hits between the two games, including sophomore Chris Snopek (4-for-7, two doubles, one triple, three RBIs), sophomore Jake Berger (4-for-7, four runs), sophomore Ben Rounds (5-for-9, five RBIs, two doubles, four runs), and junior Will Jacobsen (4-for-10, three RBIs).
 
On the mound, junior left-hander Tim Williamson earned the win in game one, tossing 5.0 innings and permitting two runs – one earned – on two hits with a season-high nine strikeouts. Junior right-hander Adam Stone gained the win in game two, throwing 6.0 innings and permitting one run on two hits with six strikeouts. First-year Tanner Smith tallied the long-relief save in game one before Chris Clark notched the save in game two.
 
In game one, the Crimson opened the contest with 11 runs in the bottom of the first. The opening frame included 11 hits, four doubles, and two triples. Snopek and first-year George Cooper each tallied two-run triples in the frame. The two teams traded runs in the second and third, moving the score to 13-2. After Brown scored five runs in the top of the sixth to pull within 13-7, the Crimson responded with four runs in the last of the eighth. Jacobsen capped the inning's scoring with a two-run double.
 
In game two, an RBI single to right field from first-year Peter Levin began the scoring in the top of the second. After the Bears tied the score at 1-1 in the top of the sixth, the Crimson answered with the game's final six runs. Junior Logan Bravo started the rally with an RBI double in the sixth to give Harvard a 2-1 lead. Rounds notched an RBI single in the seventh and a two-run double in the eighth to help propel the hosts to the victory.

Harvard Highlights: Game 1

  • All nine Crimson batters posted at least one hit and one RBI in the game one win. Harvard tallied 19 hits, 17 RBIs, six doubles, three triples, and eight walks in the game.
  • Eight Harvard batters registered multi-hit games, and five Crimson batters recorded multi-RBI games.
  • Sophomore Chris Snopek went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, two doubles, a triple, three runs, and two walks.
  • First-year George Cooper posted two triples, two RBIs, and two runs in the game. Harvard entered the day with one triple on the season as a team.
  • Junior Logan Bravo finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs, two runs, a double, and a walk.
  • Junior Will Jacobsen tallied three RBIs, two hits, one double, and a run scored.
  • Sophomore Ben Rounds posted a 2-for-4 effort with three runs, two RBIs, and a double.

  • Junior left-hander Tim Williamson earned the win (3-1), throwing 5.0 innings and allowing two runs – one earned – on two hits and six walks against a season-high nine strikeouts.
  • First-year right-hander Tanner Smith gained his first career save in long relief. He tossed 3.0 innings giving up no runs on one hit and two walks with four strikeouts.

  • Four Crimson batters posted multiple hits in game two.
  • Sophomore Ben Rounds went 3-for-5 with three RBIs, a double, and a run scored.
  • Sophomore Peter Messervy notched a 2-for-4 effort with two runs scored.
  • Junior Will Jacobsen and sophomore Jake Berger each finished 2-for-4 with a run.
  • Junior Logan Bravo and first-year Peter Levin each drove in a run.
  • Junior right-hander Adam Stone earned the win (2-2), hurling 6.0 innings and permitting just one run on two hits and one walk with six strikeouts.
  • Sophomore right-hander Chris Clark recorded the team's final nine outs to gain his second save of the season, throwing 3.0 innings and allowing no runs on two hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

Game Notes

  • Junior Logan Bravo extended his hitting streak to 10 games. He now has 10 multi-hit games on the year.
  • Sophomore Chris Snopek leads the Crimson with 11 multi-hit games on the year.
  • Sophomores Jake Berger and Ben Rounds pushed their reached base safely streaks to 16 and 12 games respectively.
  • Between the two games, Harvard posted 24 runs, 32 hits, eight doubles, three triples, and 22 RBIs. The Crimson hit .416 (24-for-77) and posted a .484 on-base percentage.
  • Four Crimson batters posted four or more hits on the day while a total of seven Harvard batters tallied three or more hits between the two games. Four Crimson batters tallied three or more RBIs.
  • Harvard's pitching staff posted a 2.50 ERA on the day, permitting five runs – three earned – on nine hits and 14 walks to 22 strikeouts over 18.0 innings. The Crimson held the Bears to a .143 batting average.
  • The Crimson posted three triples in the game one win after entering the day with one triple on the season.
  • Harvard played its first two games at home in 2022 after playing its first 19 games away from home. The twin bill began a seven-game homestand for Harvard.
  • Harvard improved to 198-123-1 all-time vs. Brown.
