Baseball Totals Five Home Runs, Drops Doubleheader to Columbia, 21-12, 9-4

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Harvard University baseball totaled five home runs on the day but dropped an Ivy League doubleheader to Columbia University, 21-12 and 9-4, on Saturday afternoon at Robertson Field at Satow Stadium in the first two games of a three-game set.
 
The Crimson (13-15, 5-5 Ivy) hit three home runs in game one and came within 15-10 before falling and notched another two homers in game two prior to the Lions (17-13, 9-2 Ivy) extending their win streak to 10 games, including its last eight Ivy contests.
 
Between the two games, junior Will Jacobsen went 5-for-9 with a home run, sophomore Peter Messervy finished 4-for-8 with a homer, and sophomore Jake Berger went 4-for-10 with a home run. Juniors Logan Bravo and Zach Brown also hit home runs for the Crimson.
 
In game one, after the Lions opened the contest with a 12-1 lead through two innings, the Crimson plated five runs in the top of the third with a two-run home run from Jacobsen highlighting the frame. In the fifth inning, a two-run home run from Bravo pulled the Crimson within 15-10. Columbia moved ahead 21-10 through the sixth before Messervy hit a two-run homer in the top of the ninth.
 
In game two, the Lions took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and extended the advantage to 6-0 through five and 9-0 through seven. The Crimson responded with a pair of two-run home runs from Berger and Brown in the top of the eighth to trim the margin to 9-4.

Harvard Highlights: Game 1

  • Junior Will Jacobsen went 3-for-5 with a home run, two RBIs, and two runs scored. He notched his ninth multi-hit game of the season and third game with three hits. Jacobsen hit his second home run of the season and second in the last three games.
  • Sophomore Chris Snopek finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI. He tallied his 14th multi-hit game of the year and fourth game with three hits. He has reached base safely in 12 straight games.
  • Junior Logan Bravo posted two hits, a home run, three RBIs, and two runs scored. He registered his 13th multi-hit game of the year and his second game this season with three RBIs. Bravo blasted his second homer of the year and reached base safely for the 16th straight game.
  • Sophomore Peter Messervy registered two hits, a home run, three RBIs, and a run scored. He hit his second homer of the year, his first game of the year with multiple RBIs, and his sixth game this season with multiple hits.
  • Sophomore Jake Berger posted two runs, a hit, and a walk. He reached base safely for the 22nd consecutive game.
  • Junior Pryor Thomas threw 2.0 innings without allowing a hit, walk, or run with three strikeouts.
  • The Crimson posted 14 hits, including three home runs. Harvard has tallied double-figure hits in six of its last eight games. The Crimson hit three home runs in a game for the first time this season.

Harvard Highlights: Game 2

  • Sophomore Jake Berger finished 3-for-5 with a home run, two RBIs, and a run scored. He launched his third home run of the season. He posted his eighth multi-hit game of the year and has reached base safely in 23 straight games.
  • Junior Will Jacobsen went 2-for-4 with a run scored. He notched his 10th multi-hit game of the season.
  • Junior Zach Brown posted a home run, two RBIs, and a run scored for his third home run of the season.
  • Sophomore Peter Messervy posted a 2-for-3 effort with a walk. He registered his seventh multi-hit game of the year.
  • The Crimson notched 10 hits in the contest. Harvard has tallied eight or more hits in nine of its 10 Ivy League games this season. 

Game Notes

  • Harvard hit five home runs in the doubleheader with three homers in game one and two homers in game two, marking the first time this season that the Crimson has hit two or more homers in back-to-back games.
  • Harvard notched 24 hits between the two games with 14 hits in game one and 10 hits in game two. The Crimson has tallied eight or more hits in nine of its 10 Ivy League games this season.
  • Sophomore Jake Berger has reached base safely in 23 straight games.
  • Seven different Crimson batters tallied RBIs across the doubleheader with five of them hitting home runs.
  • The Crimson moved to 91-69-1 all-time vs. Columbia.
