Baseball Sweeps Cornell in Ivy League Opening Doubleheader, 7-5, 11-5

ITHACA, N.Y. – Playing in an Ivy League game for the first time in over 1,000 days, Harvard University baseball swept a doubleheader from Cornell University, 7-5 and 11-5, on Friday afternoon at Hoy Field in the first two games of a three-game set.
 
Facing an Ivy League opponent for the first time in 1,041 days and competing in an Ivy League regular season game for the first time in 1,054 days, the Crimson (10-7, 2-0 Ivy) jumped out to a 4-0 lead on its way to the win in game one before scoring eight of the game's final nine runs to top the host Big Red (3-10, 0-2 Ivy) in game two.
 
In game one, sophomores Jake Berger and Peter Messervy each hit a home run, first-year Peter Levin tallied three RBIs, and first-year Sawyer Feller hit a triple. Sophomore Chris Clark tossed 4.2 innings in relief, allowing no runs on one hit and no walks with a career-high seven strikeouts.
 
In game two, five different Crimson batters posted two hits apiece including Levin who added two RBIs. First-year right-hander Sean Matson hurled 5.0 innings, permitting just one run on two hits with a career-high nine strikeouts. Sophomore right-hander Jay Driver threw 1.2 innings to earn the save (3), allowing no runs on no hits and no walks with two strikeouts.
 
Harvard opened game one with two runs in the top of the second behind RBIs from Feller and Levin. The Crimson extended the lead to 4-0 in the third on Berger's two-run homer. After Cornell pulled within 4-3 in the bottom of the third, Messervy's solo shot in the fifth gave the visitors a 5-3 advantage.  A two-run double from Levin in the fifth gave the Crimson a 7-4 edge before Clark did not permit a run over the final four frames.
 
After Cornell struck first in game two, Harvard responded with a run in the second and a pair of runs in the fifth off RBI singles from Snopek and sophomore Ben Rounds to pull ahead 3-1. The Big Red re-took a 4-3 edge in the sixth before the Crimson scored eight of the game's final nine runs. Harvard went ahead 6-4 in the seventh with three runs. Harvard added five runs in the top of the ninth with a two-run double from Levin capping the rally.

Harvard Highlights

  • Between the two games, first-year Peter Levin led the Crimson with five RBIs and two doubles while sophomore Chris Snopek went 3-for-6 with four walks and three runs scored.
  • First-year Peter Levin compiled three RBIs and a double in game one and then totaled two hits, two RBIs, and a double in game two.
  • Sophomore Chris Snopek tallied a hit and two walks in game one before compiling two hits, two runs, two walks, and an RBI in game two. He extended his hitting streak to nine games with hits in both games. Snopek has nine multi-hit games on the year.
  • Sophomore shortstop Jake Berger went 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs, three runs scored, and a walk in game one. He hit his second home run of the season. Berger posted his third multi-hit game of the year. With a pair of walks in game two, he extended his reached base safely streak to 12 games.
  • Sophomore Peter Messervy hit his first home run of the season in game one prior to notching two hits, including a double, in game two.
  • First-year Sawyer Feller tallied a triple, an RBI, a run scored, and a walk in game one. Fller hit the Crimson's first triple of the season.
  • Junior Spencer Williams went 2-for-4 in game one, posting his third multi-hit game of the year.
  • First-year George Cooper finished game two 2-for-4 with three runs scored and a double.
  • Sophomore right-hander Chris Clark tossed 4.2 innings in relief in game one, permitting no runs on one hit and no walks with a career-high seven strikeouts to earn the win (1-0). For the year, Clark has thrown 11.2 innings, allowing just two runs with 17 strikeouts.
  • Sophomore Ben Rounds posted two hits, one RBI, one run, and one walk in game two.
  • In the game two start, first-year right-hander Sean Matson hurled 5.0 innings, permitting just one run on two hits and two walks with a career-high nine strikeouts.
  • Earning his third save of the season in game two, sophomore right-hander Jay Driver threw 1.2 innings to close the game, allowing no runs on no hits and no walks with two strikeouts. He has thrown 11.0 innings on the year and has not allowed a run with 19 strikeouts to one walk.

Game Notes

  • Harvard tallied five extra-base hits in game one – two home runs, one triple, and two doubles. The Crimson tacked on four more doubles in game two for nine total extra-base hits on the day.
  • The Crimson totaled 19 hits and 15 walks between the two games. Five Harvard batters posted two hits apiece in game two.
  • Harvard's pitching staff tallied 22 strikeouts over 18.0 innings in the twin bill.
  • Harvard has registered eight or more hits in eight of its last nine games.
  • Harvard improved to 109-54 all-time vs. Cornell.
