Baseball Falls to No. 24 Miami in Series Finale, 10-0

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Harvard University baseball fell to the No. 24 University of Miami in game three of a three-game series, 10-0, on Sunday afternoon at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field in a rubber game after the two teams split the first two matchups of the set.
 
Completing its season-opening series after a 719-day wait, the Crimson (1-2) allowed just two runs after the first two innings, but the Hurricanes (7-1) struck for four runs in each of the first and second frames.
 
Harvard won game one in the series, 11-6, on Friday night before Miami took game two, 2-1, on Saturday evening.
 
For Harvard, relievers sophomore Porter Jordheim, senior Jack Mahala, and junior Will Jacobsen allowed just two runs on three hits from the third through eighth innings.
 
Miami tallied four runs in each of the first and second innings, including a three-run home run in the bottom of the first. The Hurricanes closed the scoring with one run in each of the third and sixth frames.

Harvard Highlights

  • In his collegiate debut, sophomore right-handed pitcher Porter Jordheim allowed just one run on two hits in 2.0 innings of relief.
  • Senior right-hander Jack Mahala threw a scoreless and hitless inning of relief with two strikeouts.
  • Junior right-hander Will Jacobsen tossed the final 3.0 innings, permitting just one run on one hit.
  • Junior outfielder Spencer Williams, first-year designated hitter Sawyer Feller, and junior center fielder Hunter Baldwin each tallied a hit for the Crimson, including a double for Baldwin. 

Game Notes

  • First-year first baseman Peter Levin and sophomore right-handed pitcher Porter Jordheim each made his collegiate debut in the game. Over the course of the weekend, Harvard had 13 student-athletes appear in a college game for the first time.
  • For the series, sophomore outfielder Peter Messervy led the Crimson with a .333 batting average (3-for-9) while junior catcher Zach Brown paced the team with three RBIs.
  • Harvard used 12 pitchers in the series with five of them not allowing a run and 10 of them permitting two runs or fewer.
  • The Crimson moved to 2-10 all-time vs. Miami.

Harvard travels to Houston, Texas for a four-game series with Rice University. The Crimson will play game one on Friday, Mar. 4 at 7:30 p.m. ET, a doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 5 starting at 2:00 p.m. ET, and game four on Sunday, Mar. 6 at 1:00 p.m. ET.
