Mission Statement
The purpose of this statement is to develop and sustain our purpose
and mission in the Athletic Training Department at Harvard
University. In accordance with the laws of the state of
Massachusetts governing the practice of athletic training and code
of Professional Practice and Standards of Practice of the National
Athletic Trainers Association, the Athletic Training Department is
responsible for providing quality health care for all
student-athletes in the most efficient and beneficial manner
possible. This will be accomplished by:
1. Respecting the dignity of each individual
student-athlete and recognizing differences in gender, race, and
cultural background.
2. Maintaining the confidentiality of both written
and verbal information obtained from the athlete.
3. Being cognizant of the "total" athlete, including
his/her emotional, mental, and physical needs.
4. Thoroughly and competently evaluating each
injured athlete in accordance with the laws of the state of
Massachusetts governing the practice of athletic training and the
standards of practice of the NATA, referring the athlete to the
designated physician when deemed essential and necessary.
5. Staffing the athletic training room during posted
hours.
6. Accurately and regularly documenting each injured
athlete's progress and care following Athletic Training Department
policies and procedures.
7. Encouraging and contributing to an atmosphere of
mutual cooperation, respect and support with the attending
physician(s) of the athlete, the athletic coaching staff, the
athletic and university administration and other university
departments.
Department Hours
Our hours of operation are Monday-Friday 7 a.m. until noon 1:30-7
p.m., and weekends as determined by event schedules. Our
Orthopedic Physicians hold clinics each weekday afternoon (except
Friday).
Our internist is in Dillon Field House Monday and Wednesday from
2-4 p.m.
Facility Information
Our facility, located in Dillon Fieldhouse, is over 5000 sq.ft. The
room is equipped with various modalities (ultrasound and electrical
muscle stimulation), a hydrotherapy room, rehabilitation and
cardiovascular equipment. There is a medical/surgical emergency
room located in close proximity to the physician's clinic area.
There are two private exam rooms, a physician's office,
medical library, medical record room, and a casting/orthotics room.
Our facility also has x-ray services available in the clinic area
as well as intermittent compression units. Student observation in
the orthopedic clinic helps facilitate interaction and confidential
case discussion between athletic training students, physical
therapy students, medical students, and sports medicine staff
members.
Therapy Approach
An orthopedic manual therapy approach is practiced for spine and
extremity dysfunction. Being involved in an athlete's
rehabilitation in this setting allows one to follow the athlete
from acute injury to return to play status. This site would be
ideal for those students (athletic training or physical therapy)
with a strong interest in orthopedics and sports related injuries
and medical problems.
