Susan Byrne has been Associate Director of Athletics for Marketing and Sales in Harvard University’s Department of Athletics since 2008.
Byrne is responsible for creating and implementing marketing strategy for a department, which has 42 varsity sports, the most teams in Division 1 athletics. Her focus is on maximizing efforts to promote the numerous and varied athletic programs at Harvard through traditional, yet innovative ways. She leads a team that strives to build community and pride in Harvard through the engagement of students, faculty, staff, alumni, businesses and neighbors. Byrne’s core responsibilities include managing the areas of marketing, branding, promotions, game presentations, special events, as well as ticket, merchandise, concession and corporate sales.
Byrne brings significant experience to her position from working cooperatively with business, community and academic groups. Previously, she was Vice President of Advertising and Promotions for the Boston Bruins. During her 19-year career with the NHL organization, she had risen from Public Relations Assistant to Director of Marketing and Community Relations. She also served as the Bruins’ Chief Marketing Officer and Community Relations liaison to the NHL. Byrne was also involved in managing several special events, including the NHL All-Star Game and Draft, player retirement ceremonies and the Annual Bruins Wives’ Charity Carnival. She began her career at the New England Sports Network (NESN) and has consulted on special projects for the Bank of America Championship, Grant Communications and Searching for Profit. Previously, Byrne has served as an adjunct professor at Salem State College and Northeastern University.
A native of North Wales, Pennsylvania, Byrne has lived in the Boston suburbs since graduating from Colgate University with honors in history. She played varsity lacrosse at Colgate as well as at North Penn High School, and now is a collegiate, high school and youth women’s lacrosse official. Byrne was a member of the Marketing Advisory Committee for US Lacrosse and she served on the Board of Directors for several non-profit organizations including the Boston Bruins Charity Foundation, the Bay State Games and MetroLacrosse.
Currently, Byrne is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA), the National Sports Marketing Network (NSME) and Women in Sports and Entertainment (WISE Boston).
