CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard men’s lightweight and heavyweight varsity eights have been named the COOP Athlete of the Week for May 20.
The Crimson crews won both first varsity grand final events at
the EARC Sprints for the 14th time in school history and the second
time in the last three years, a feat accomplished only four other
times by non-Harvard crews. The victories also earned both squads
Ivy League titles.
The Harvard heavyweight varsity eight won by more than five seconds over Brown to help the Crimson secure its fourth straight Rowe Cup and 33rd overall. The Crimson completed the course in 5:56.721 to win with open water after controlling the race throughout.
The lightweight varsity eight was up a few seats at the midway point and kept building its advantage to seven seats at the 1,250-meter mark. By the home stretch, the Crimson gained open water as the crews rowed past the spectator area just before the finish line. Harvard crossed the line at 6:03.607, well ahead of second-place Yale at 6:07.967.
