CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – After tallying six points on three goals and three assists at Princeton, Dean Gibbons has been selected as the COOP Athlete of the Week for April 25, 2011.
In a critical game for the Crimson to remain in contention to participate in the Ivy League tournament, Gibbons recorded a point on two-thirds of the Crimson’s goals in the 9-8 win over the Tigers. Gibbons got Harvard on the board with his first tally to cut the Tigers lead to 3-1. He opened the second quarter with his second goal to even the score at 3-3. Gibbons picked up his first assist on a Matt Hull buzz-beater at the half to give Harvard a 6-3 lead and then set up Jack Doyle and Kevin Vaughan in the third quarter for scores.
Gibbons completed his own hat trick with 7:47 remaining in the contest. That goal would prove to be the game-winner, as the Tigers closed the gap to 9-8 with about four minutes left, but the Crimson held off the Tigers late charge. The win allows Harvard to control its own path to the Ivy League tournament as a win over Yale this weekend gives them a spot in the bracket.
