CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard heavyweight crew captain Anthony Locke and lightweight captain Will Newell have been selected as the COOP Athletes of the Week for May 16, 2011, representing their teams, which each captured varsity, team and Ivy championships at Eastern Sprints.
Harvard won both lightweight and heavyweight varsity gold for the 13th time. Only four other schools have accomplished that feat, once each.
The Crimson won six grand finals on the day, including five of the six divisions that count toward the team competitions. The winners were: the heavyweight and lightweight varsity eights, heavyweight and lightweight second varsity eights, heavyweight freshman eight and heavyweight fourth varsity eight.
The heavyweight crew, anchored by Locke, sat atop the team standings Sunday evening with 41 points, seven more than Ancient Eight foe Princeton. The lightweight crew, led by Newell, took the title with 33 points, two ahead of rival Yale.
